Huge thanks to everyone who entered the Gipsy Road lamp post banner artwork competition! There was a wonderful response and the judges had a difficult time selecting just four designs for the two double-sided lamp post banners on the entrance to Gipsy Road, off Paxton roundabout. Following the judges’ deliberations, we’re pleased to announce the four ‘Our Home, Our Gipsy Hill’ designs which have been selected:

Including all the special elements of the area, from friendly Fanny the Cat to a cup of coffee I gathered what makes Gipsy Hill a special home.

The people are the main part of the community, but that’s not all – the nature and wildlife attracted by the garden (as well as Fanny the Cat), the symbols of happiness and care brought to those who get to experience this community, especially one that was created by Friends of Gipsy Hill and all they’ve done

To commemorate our namesake, I’ve illustrated Margarate Finch, Queen of the Gypsies, crouching in the doorway of her Vardo on Gipsy Hill.

Gipsy Hill is home because of the fantastic community, set in the context of parks, woodland, community planting projects, pubs, independent businesses and of course Fanny the Cat.
Keep an eye out for the new lamp post banners, which will be welcoming people to Gipsy Road soon!
In addition to the lamp post banners, we’re pleased to announce that the other entries will be displayed at the Paxton Parklet (near Paxton Vets, 231 Gipsy Road) for people to enjoy in the community space. Look out for these amazing entries making an appearance on Gipsy Road:

I’m Rosa aged 9 and lived here all my life! I’ve drawn the hill, trees, church and Fanny the Cat. All important things connected to Gipsy Hill.

It is Gipsy Hill instead of pollution, it has lovely trees!

Flowers and rainbow in Gipsy Hill.

Capturing the feeling of sitting on Norwood Park hill on a sunny day, looking at the city, thinking “they don’t know what they’re missing!”

Off the bus onto the Long Meadow Green, green, and more green
Cheerful dandelions, returning year after year,
Alas, where have the Jersey cows gone?

This is a scene consisting of elements of Gipsy Hill that carry personal memories of fun, community, woodland walks, commutes up and down the hill and local wildlife.
Thanks to local businesses Cravo & Canela (selling Brazilian cakes, sweets and savouries), and Manuel’s Italian and Mediterranean restaurant for funding the lamp post banners and making this competition possible, and Caffe Luna and Paper Stories for donating additional prizes. The competition was organised in collaboration with Paper Stories.
